Powder Coating

Pinholes in powder coating are tiny crater-like defects caused by trapped gases or contaminants that escape during cure. Common sources include oily residues, moisture in compressed air, porous castings that outgas, excessive film build, and over-baking. To prevent pinholes, BLUETEE recommends thorough degreasing and rinsing, adequate dry-off, proper part grounding, and media blasting or pre-bake “outgas” cycles for porous substrates. Use clean, dry compressed air with dryers/filters; maintain booth/oven temperatures; and apply even film builds with suitable powders (e.g., outgas-forgiving formulas). For small defects, lightly sand/feather the area and recoat or use color-matched touch-up; for widespread pinholing, strip and reapply after correcting root causes.
