Development of Fluorocarbon-Polyester Hybrid Super Weather-Resistant Powder Coating
- Bluetee,

Introduction
Fluorocarbon powder coatings offer exceptional weather resistance and chemical durability, far exceeding traditional epoxy or polyester coatings. However, pure fluorocarbon systems face challenges such as poor adhesion, weak pigment wetting, and high costs, limiting market adoption.
This study presents a hybrid approach: blending fluorocarbon resins with polyester resins to improve adhesion and mechanical properties while retaining UV stability. The result is a cost-effective, super weather-resistant powder coating.
Materials and Methods
Formulation and Process
The hybrid coating uses a balanced mix of fluorocarbon and polyester resins, inorganic ceramic pigments for UV resistance, and external-blocked isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the curing agent. Raw materials are blended, extruded, ground, sieved, electrostatically sprayed, and cured at 200°C for 15 minutes.
Key Findings
1. Improved Performance Through Resin Blending
Fluorocarbon resins offer excellent UV and chemical resistance due to strong C-F bonds, while polyester resins improve adhesion and pigment dispersion. A 1:1 blend of fluorocarbon and polyester provides the best balance of properties.
2. Optimized Pigment Selection
Inorganic ceramic pigments outperform organic and standard inorganic pigments in weathering tests, maintaining color and gloss over time. These pigments also integrate well into the resin matrix, preventing migration and degradation.
3. Application Considerations
Fluorocarbon-polyester coatings require proper substrate preparation, such as thorough cleaning and chromate conversion for aluminum surfaces. Application is done via electrostatic spray, with film thickness between 50–70 μm, followed by curing at 200°C for 15 minutes.
Conclusion
Blending fluorocarbon and polyester resins addresses the limitations of pure fluorocarbon coatings—offering improved adhesion, better pigment wetting, and enhanced mechanical properties—while maintaining superior weather and chemical resistance.
This hybrid system delivers a high-performance, super weather-resistant powder coating that is both durable and cost-effective, making it ideal for architectural and industrial applications requiring long-term protection.
